One Teacher One Laptop: Arrangement, Distribution and Payment

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has issued a press release dated 9th September 2021 to update teachers and the general public on the details of the One Teacher One Laptop initiative.

Arrangement

The GES has stated the the initiative was actually conceived by the teacher unions at the pre-tertiary level, namely Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) and Coalition of Concerned Teachers, Ghana (CCT-GH).

The teacher unions made the proposal to Government through the Ministry of Education, Ghana Education Service, to support the initiative with a 70 percent subsidy for each teacher in the procurement of the laptop computers. In effect, the beneficiary teacher will be required to pay the remaining 30 percent of the total cost of the laptop computer.

Cost

The total cost of the laptop is GH¢1,831.47. The Government has absorbed GH¢1,282.30 hence a beneficiary teacher is expected to pay GH¢549.44.

Mode of Payment

According to the press release, beneficiary teachers would have to pay for the said laptop computers through a deduction from the annual Continuous Professional Development (CPD) allowances that teachers receive. The release further stated that it shall be a one off-deduction, and not in instalment as previously circulated by some news portals.

Quality

The press release has indicated that the laptop computers are of high quality and come loaded with quality educational content (EDUKAT) on the new standard based curriculum; the educational content could be accessed without internet connectivity to suit teachers who may have internet challenges.

Distribution

The distribution has already begun and teachers at St. Mary’s Girls Senior High School have received theirs. Other teachers are to expect theirs in the coming days.
